Sacred Flora of Mother Mary

Looking at a Medieval image of the Virgin Mary you often see her surrounded by flowers. What people may not know, that there were thousands of plants dedicated to the Virgin Mary between the 12th-15th century. Many people during this time period were closely connected to nature. They worked in the fields for their livelihood.  Herbs were their medicines and flowers were found in their wood carvings, embroidery and laced through out their poetry and song.
Much of the population did not know how to read and by creating legends about Mary’s Flora people would be reminded when working in the fields of the Christian higher spiritual values.

Through out Europe Black Madonnas shrines were sacred places that were used for pilgrimage. The Black Madonnas holds the secrets of the fertility of the Earth. These sites are often built over standing stones, next to fresh water springs and built with the ley of the land. Carl Jung speaks about the Black Virgin in this way.“The Virgin Mary was really the black earth, not yet fecundated by torrents of rain.. ~Carl Jung

Through this series of original photographs of “The Sacred Flora of Mother Mary” I hope it can be a touch-stone for people to reconnect to Sacred Earth.  I do this through beautiful photographs of the Virgin Mary from her many shrines around the world. I also photograph her Sacred Flora I have grown or found in the wild places in nature. I  have created a slide-show of photographs that capture the Madonna and her flora.  The experience can act as a reminder we are connected to the Infinite Light of Christ and we also have our roots in this Sacred Earth. The creation of making a Flower Mandala can also be offered as an experience for those of congregation who would like a workshop after church services.

Raylene Abbott began to study the history the Black Madonna in 1992 which open her path to living in France for 4 1/2 years where she was published. Her passion led her to traveling the pilgrimage route of the Black Madonna and Magdalene.  Raylene is a mystical writer but her love of research and history offers a historical foundation to her writings. She writes on the subject of healing and the separation of Nature/Christianity. Raylene is an international author. Her book was published in France in 2006 “L’Emergence de la Femme Divine” {The Emergence of the Divine Woman}. This same book later was published in Italy, Turkey, Japan and the USA as “Between the Visions. Her recent book “A Mystics Journey to the Sacred Sites of France” is newly in paperback. She is a published author of six different books.
