The Magdalene archetype over the last few decades has finally taken her rightful place in the retinue of Saints. Some of this has happened because of the findings of the Gnostic Gospels.
“The Gospel of Mary is an apocryphal book discovered in 1896 in a 5th-century papyrus codex written in Sahidic Coptic. The codex Papyrus Berolinensis 8502 was purchased in Cairo by German scholar Karl Reinhardt.” quote Wikipedia
This text has shed light on the great love Christ had for the Magdalene and the love she had for Christ.
Roman was the seat of Catholic Church. Pagan Roman had the archetype of the Love Goddess Venus before the church was established. Her emblem was the rose and Eros her son shot his arrows into the hearts of all lovers. Venus was known as promiscuous Goddess. But this was all about to change when Emperor Constantine became Christian he signed a decree in 313 that Roman Empire would become tolerant towards Christians. The belief of Virgin Birth of Jesus came into play around the second century. This aspect of Jesus divinity was agreed on at the Council of Nicene of early church fathers that wrote the Nicene Creed. This decision changed the feminine archetype for the next 2000 years.
Venus’s rose dissolved into the flower of the Virgin Mary. Mary Magdalene later became the repenting whore even though there was never anything written in the bible that Mary Magdalene was a prostitute. Giving the Roman women the archetype of a Virgin was a smart political move for the Emperor of Roman. Sex became sinful, woman were left with only the Virgin archetype. This left the Roman army without much sex and the aggression became the fuel for the soldiers to go to war and conquer. Thus the Roman Empire was created. The virgin and whore has played out in male and female relationships for centuries. This polarity has wound both men and women of having healthy relationships and it plays out in society’s collective unconscious
Mary Magdalene being recongized can now have her rightfully place and be reinstated as Christ’s Beloved . This important archetype can heal the split between women/men spirituality and sexuality.
Note: Magdalene’s Rose. This image I took of Mary Magdalene at the Mission of Santa Barbara in California. I added Eros as a layer to representing sexual attraction, that I found in Ashland Oregon on top of a fountain. The full open Magdalene Rose combines sexuality and the beauty of an open heart.
